The tenor guitar is steel strung and traditionally tuned A D G C (high to low) which means that players of the tenor banjo, mandolin, mandola, etc will find no difficulty in transferring to it as the intervals between the strings are the same as they are used to.

However, it's very versatile, and many players prefer to tune it like a guitar (or baritone ukulele) which enables it to fit comfortably into the uke family.

In the same way as Celtic musicians will often play bouzoukis and citterns in open tunings, the tenor guitar can also be very effective when tuned this way...
