"Half-Round" strings (sometimes called "Groundwound") are a roundwound string which has been ground to produce a flatter, more comfortable feel. As you might expect, the sound is somewhere between a roundwound and a flatwound string. The advantages are: a smoother feel and less fretboard (and finger!) wear. They are kinder to fretless fingerboards too.
