|Makala 'MK' Series Ukuleles|
We think that the Makala 'MK' series ukuleles (pictured above) are probably the best choice for the 'serious beginner'. At such affordable prices, you could be forgiven for thinking that they are just toys, but this is certainly not the case...
Professionally constructed with a body made from agathis and a rosewood fingerboard and bridge, these ukes have a low, comfortable action and geared machine heads (tuners) - representing excellent value for money.
A further bonus is that these ukes are now fitted with Aquila Nylgut strings which are the preferred choice of most players and usually only fitted to more expensive ukuleles.
Makala 'MK' series ukes are available in a range of sizes: The Soprano uke is the most popular and the most familiar, and it is this size which is typically associated with the ukulele. However, many players prefer the Concert size which is just a little larger with a slightly longer scale which some people find easier. Both the Soprano and the Concert are tuned to the same pitch (A,E,C,G).
The Tenor ukulele is the next size up and, because of its larger body, it has a more mellow sound. It is also usually tuned the same as a Soprano, although some players prefer to tune it to a slightly lower pitch (G,D,Bb,F).
Finally, the big brother of the family is the Baritone ukulele which is about the same size as a child's half size guitar - although, unlike the guitar, it still only has four strings. However, it is quite similar in that it is tuned the same as the top four strings of the guitar (E,B,G,D).
The sizes of these ukes are as follows (cm.) :
|Scale length (string length from top of fingerboard to bridge)||35||38||43||51|
