Cuban Tres

Tres Cubanos by Francisco Bros
The Cuban Tres (also referred to as the Cuban Tres Guitar or Tres Cubano) is strung with three courses of two strings which may either tuned in unison or in octaves.
The usual tuning (starting from the pair of strings farthest away from you in the playing position) is eE/cc/gG. One of the things that gives the tres such an interesting and unique sound is that the two strings on top (tuned in octaves) are higher than the two strings on the bottom (also tuned in octaves). The two strings in the middle are usually in unison. This gives the arpeggio played on the Tres a sort of backward sound that is distinctive to the Cuban Son Style.

Currently, since the release of the "Buena Vista Social Club" album, the Cuban Tres is enjoying increasing popularity all over the world as more and more players get to hear about it. Played with a plectrum it is perfect for both melodic lead and intricate rhythmic patterns, and its loud, clear sound makes it an ideal instrument for Cuban, Puerto Rican and Latin popular music.
